Desert Legend Stew

A semester long film project starring a pygmy jerboa as he wanders the desert in search of quality soup ingredients

Character Process: Jay-Boh

The Main character of the story, Jay-Boh, sports an outfit reminiscent of cowboys from the wild west. I the film he fights using a giant kitchen knife that he carries with him through the desert. Multiple kinds of coats, hats and knives were experimented with to convey his character of both a wandering forager and a chef.

Character Process: Carnadillo

Sticking to the desert theme of the film, the monster that appears as Jay-Boh’s final challenge is a large carnivorous armadillo. Finding a balance between the dinosaur like claws and teeth and the overall armadillo shaped body proved a little difficult. At times the monster was meant to be more expressive and have more of a personality, though the final design ended up reflecting its role as a mindless, wild beast.

Character Process: Hamster

The hamster character at the end of the film is Jay-Boh’s reason to fight as hard as he does for the soup, so the design of the hamster was always meant to invoke sympathy and a sense of helplessness despite his joy similar to that of a child. The decision to put him in a cast came when the question arose of why Jay-Boh couldn’t just take the hamster with him on his trip.
